Field Days Organic is a project run by Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC). The project runs on Wednesday afternoons from 12.30 to 3.30 at the Amelia Trust Farm in Barry. The volunteers work alongside adults with learning and physical disabilities and help to support the community farm and build upon the skills and abilities of the service users. The volunteers within the project take part in a range of enjoyable activities such as planting and digging up vegetables, building fences and at Christmas time volunteers help service users to make decorations such as snowmen and reindeer out of wood from around the farm!
Once all the hard-work is complete, volunteers and service users enjoy a warm cup of tea and lots of biscuits in the café located at the farm which is a great place to get to know each other a little bit better. It is great for us volunteers to see how the service users are progressing throughout the year, building in confidence, speaking skills and attentiveness really makes us feel that we are making an impact on their lives! The project is also great experience if you are interested in working with adult mental health but do not feel ready to volunteer at a hospital, as the farm has a relaxed and welcoming environment with plenty of potential activities to take part in. Overall, the experience has given me an insight into what it’s like to be a lead volunteer on a project and has been a great opportunity to interact with people of all ages, genders and experience levels and I would recommend to all!
