National Volunteering Week || Wednesday 1st June – Sunday 12th June
SVC is always super proud and grateful for the time and passion that our amazing volunteers give all year round on a range of projects and one-off events. Therefore, the SVC staff team wanted to get out of the office and give something back to the community, and what better time to do that than in National Volunteering Week!
Local School DIY re-vamp!
To kick start this week, on Wednesday 1st June, the staff team visited a local high school – Cantonian – that was in need of a little tlc! Dressed in our most ‘sensible’ DIY attire we arrived at the school for 9am and were greeted by the school's lovely and very dedicated handyman, Bernard! Our job for the day was to paint the railings which lined the entrance to the school. The railings were very much in need of a new lick of paint and revamp as they had not been touched up in 10+ years. The team worked all day transforming the railings from a rusty worn-out green colour to a new shiny blue, which instantly gave them a new lease of life. Whilst painting, we also had the opportunity to engage with lots of community members, one of which said that it’s the, “best they’ve looked in the 16 years that I’ve lived here!”
Finishing the work at 5pm and looking more like smurfs than human beings… we all felt a massive sense of achievement with the work that had been completed. Before leaving for the day, we had a nice chat with the school's head teacher and handyman, whom were both extremely thankful for our efforts! We are already planning and looking forward to our next visit… I wonder what DIY skills we will pick up then!!
Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board Thank You Event
On Friday 3rd June SVC will be attending a 'thank you’ reception for Health Board Volunteers and Third Sector Organisations who support the Health board. The event is to express the board’s appreciation for the commitment and loyalty that all volunteers provide in supporting patients, service users and staff across our local hospitals and in the community. SVC’s fantastic volunteers have worked across several settings within the Mental Health service befriending and facilitating activities for patients. Don’t forget to pop in from 3pm to the Sports and Social Club at University Hospital of Wales to celebrate. Also Made in Cardiff will be there so keep an eye out for the SVC stall :)
Stockland Street
Our volunteers are also getting stuck in with National Volunteering Week this Sunday by supporting a local street to host a street party. Stockland Street is a multi-cultural neighbourhood and SVC has been working alongside Cardiff University’s Community Gateway and a resident of Stockland Street to organise the event. Volunteers will be helping out on the day to bring everyone together and run some of the planned activities! Fingers crossed for a sunny Sunday!
The Tough Trail Challenge!
The SVC staff team are not back in the office and behind their computers for long though… as on Thursday 9th June we will be embarking on a 27 mile walk from Merthyr to Cardiff! Yes, that’s right, 27 miles…. Eeeek!
We will be walking down the beautiful Taff trail all with the aim to raise money for a wonderful local charity – Innovate Trust – that supports adults with disabilities to live independently.
We would appreciate any donations small or large :) Please follow our JustGiving link!
Thank you!
