What initially drew you to applying for the SVC Board of Trustees?
I have always been amazed by the impact that a small act of volunteering can have on the life of someone in need. Over time, this has developed into a passion and drive to help others through volunteering. I was initially drawn to applying for a position on the SVC Board of Trustees to experience this from a different perspective. Being ‘behind the scenes’ of the third sector is an amazing opportunity that can be otherwise difficult to experience.
How have you found your time on the SVC Board of Trustees?
My time on the SVC Board of Trustees has been an adventure, and one that I would definitely recommend. The vast range of events, fundraising and campaigning means that there is something for everyone! I have had the opportunity to meet volunteers and beneficiaries alike, with different backgrounds and views on the world. It’s really opened my eyes to the third sector and fostered a different level of appreciation of the individuals within our society.
Why do you think people should apply to be on the Board of Trustees?
The SVC Board of Trustees provides an opportunity to support to some of the most vulnerable people in the local community. In addition, SVC is a family. Staff and fellow volunteers alike, are welcoming and encouraging. It doesn’t matter if you have no experience of working within a charity or several years, diversity is welcomed. There is opportunity for each trustee to learn from the experience and knowledge of each other.
What would be your advice to anyone wanting to apply for the Board?
Give it a go! You’ll never know unless you try. I guarantee that the SVC Board of Trustees will offer something that will grab your attention, whether its Social Media, Fundraising, Marketing, Events, Innovation, Charity Commission, Advancing Technology etc.
What’s been your favourite moment/memory of your time on the Board of Trustees?
Tough one – there are so many! One of my favourite memories would have to be when running a family fun day event for children at a local hospital. At the end, a parent come over to me and to say a simple “Thank-you”. They explained that spending an afternoon as a family, and seeing a smile on their child’s face, made them feel ‘normal’ for the first time in months. This reminded me of the impact that can be made, by such a small contribution.
Any final words you’d like to give people thinking of applying?
Joining the SVC Board of Trustees has been the best decision that I have made in the past 4 years - I look back with both life-changing experiences and lifelong friends. I’d recommend it to anyone!
