As an SVC volunteer working closely with beneficiaries, their families and other professionals you are put in a responsible position of trust. You should not mention any personal details about beneficiaries outside your project.
Remember – there is no such thing as absolute confidentially. Information will be passed on when there is a legal responsibility to do so or a need to protect the person’s health and welfare. If you think a service user is about to disclose something serious and they ask you not to tell anyone, do not make that promise. Depending on the nature of the disclosure you may be obliged to tell a member of staff so further steps can be taken, therefore you will not be able to honour your promise.
If your role involves working with confidential documents then you will be told and trained on how to handle these.
